Well I have just purchased my first laptop and my very first Mac all in one. Including a tax free oregon based store and my student discount, I picked up a Brand new Mac Book Pro with a Three Year Warranty for $2100.
Now, I have been using Windows based PC's for probably the last 15 or more years and am heavily steeped in it's culture.
Being an avid computer user, a self proclaimed gadget geek and a lover of technology, I decided to branch out to a new operating system.
Don't get me wrong, I've had stints in the past where I ran various distros of Linux on my PC. But I've never fully switched over and invested so much in another OS.
So, first impressions:
now please keep in mind these are very first impressions. I am a complete OSX noob at this point so my opinion has little merit on the advanced side.
For general use, the experience and ease of use is amazing. With apple's proprietary-ness they are able to have a much tighter integrated user experience (which I love). But when it comes to more advanced configuration, I've ran into some snags. I am not able to (very easily) make my desktop the way I want it with programs all arranged, and keeping my open program windows organized and accessible is rather difficult because there is no list of all open windows like in the start bar of XP.
Using iPhoto to organize my pictures has been fine, but it took me quite a while to realize that iPhoto maintains it's own library separate from the images i put in the image folder. It bothers me that I have to right click on the iPhoto.library icon and choose "reveal contents of package" to view my raw files.
This is extremely frustrating when I want to manage pictures for websites with iPhoto and can't navigate to the files on my hd through a file upload window. I have to go through and export each photo from iPhoto that I want to upload.
Documentation is very scarce. I love the simplicity and design of Apples user manual, but it hardly covers much more than a beginning computer user might need. In-depth help is hard to find without searching the internet and everything seems like it's some sort of a workaround that a user found.
HOWEVER, I have ben very pleased with the performance of the laptop. It cost only 800 dollars more than my desktop and has better performance overall by far.
It is still hard to figure out how to do some stuff with almost no explanations of the way the OS works to be found.
Now to be objective, I am quite sure that ANY beginning user to any OS would be just as confused. It's just that I am used to the windows experience and am having to wrap my head around a completely new way of thinking.
Overall, I love my new mac and the challenge it presents. But it is also able to do everything I need at the moment (even if some of the stuff I can't figure out just yet).
